Working Together:

There is perhaps no other medical specialty where the relationship between physician and industry has yielded so much innovation and positive change. Similarly, The ASCRS Foundation’s partnership with industry is critical to its continued success in humanitarian eyecare, research, and public awareness.

Humanitarian Eyecare:

  • Ethiopia: The ASCRS Foundation relies on the generous support of industry, and individual donors to continue its work in Ethiopia. The foundation’s Robert Sinskey Eye Institute treated over 10,000 patients in 2010. The need is endless and in the next year the foundation will begin an expansion project to more than double the size of the facility.
  • China: In collaboration with Project Vision, The ASCRS Foundation operates four cataract surgery training centers in China. The foundation is working to train a new generation of surgeons who’ll staff government-built clinics throughout the country in an effort to reduce China’s backlog of 6.7 million cataract-blinded patients.

Research: Eyecare advances are dependent upon continued research. The ASCRS Foundation makes 22 grants and awards each year to help support new technologies and innovative treatment options.

Awareness/Education: Through its Eye Surgery Education Council (ESEC), the foundation seeks to provide honest, accurate and non-branded patient information on the risks and benefits associated with modern cataract and refractive surgery. We work with patients and the press to insure an accurate understanding of all that ophthalmology offers.
